Special Education Classes

At PS116K we offer ICT classes and self-contained classes.

Our ICT classes have two teachers a special education and a general education teacher.  The teachers work together to implement a diverse range of teaching styles to meet the academic needs of all students.  Our ICT classes are made up of general eduction and special education students who benefit from small student to teacher ratios and small group instruction.

Our Self-Contained Special Education Program is a small class setting with no more than 12 students for 1 special education certified teacher.  This classroom also has a paraprofessional who provides instructional support under the guidance of the teacher.

Instructional Materials

WIN Program

Our WIN Program is based on the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) framework.  The MTSS framework has four essential components: screening, progress monitoring, multi-level prevention system, and data-based decision making. This program focuses on every student’s specific phonics needs by providing tiered instruction.

HMH Into Reading/¡Arriba La Lectura!

HMH is the Reading program that LMA Magnet School follows. ¡Arriba La Lectura! is the Spanish version of the program. This version is used by our Dual Language classes.  This curriculum is based on the concepts of The Science of Reading. The Science of Reading is an approach to teaching reading that is based on decades of research and evidence. This program offers a balanced approach to literacy instruction while supporting teachers in developing a culture of learning and growth. Into Reading/¡Arriba La Lectura! helps all learners believe in the power of "I can", while becoming lifelong learners.

Project Based Learning

Project-based learning (PBL) is a teaching method that encourages students to learn through real-world challenges and problems. Our teachers have partnered with Columbia University to write their unit plans using a backward design approach while ensuring that they are standards based. These projects incorporate our Magnet theme of Leadership through Multimedia and the Arts. Our Project Based Learning Units are hands-on, engaging and fun!

Amplify Science

At LMA Magnet School, Amplify Science is used from Kindergarten to 5th Grade. This bilingual program meets all of our students' learning needs. It is a highly engaging, phenomena-based program that integrates the latest practices in science teaching and learning, as well as interactive digital tools and hands-on activities, to teach students how to think, read, write, and argue like real scientists and engineers. Teachers often tie these Science concepts into our PBL units.

Passport to Social Studies

Passport to Social Studies is aligned to the NYS Social Studies Learning Standards. Students use rich content, themes and big ideas to learn history, geography, economics, civics, citizenship and government. They use these important skills to “think like historians.” Teachers often tie these Social Studies concepts into our PBL units.

Thinking Maps

Thinking Maps is a set of 8 visual patterns that correlate to specific cognitive processes. They are used across all grades and content areas to build the critical thinking, problem-solving, comprehension, and communication skills necessary for academic success in every domain.
